Joseph
Shine is a licensed physical therapist and is the President
of
Performance Physical Therapy.
He is an expert in performing Functional Capacity
Evaluations, Ergonomic Assessments, and WorkSaver Pre-Placement
Screens. He also enjoys lecturing throughout southern Louisiana and
has been qualified as an expert witness in state, federal and
workers’ compensation court.
Joe
received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from
Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans.
He has completed 2 years of advanced post graduate
residency training and has passed extensive didactic and practical
examinations to earn a Certificate in Orthopedic Manual Therapy
from the Ola Grimsby Institute.
He is currently completing his research on Early Physical
Therapy Intervention for Patients who are Post-Meniscal Repair
based on manual therapy techniques to complete the requirements
for Doctorate of Physical Therapy. He has attended many manual therapy courses taught by
the University of St. Augustine and Stanley Paris, the Ola Grimsby
Institute, and Bjorn Svendsen.
He is certified in performing Functional Capacity
Evaluations from Richard Bunch, PhD, P.T. of Industrial Safety and
Rehabilitation Institute. He is also recognized as an Ergonomics Specialist and has
trained through the Back Institute of Atlanta, Ray Matheson
Association, and Industrial Safety and Rehabilitation Institute.
Joe is also certified in performing WorkSaver Pre-Placement
Screenings. In
addition to his specialized studies in manual therapy for
orthopedic problems, with special concentrations in spine
dysfunctions, Joe has completed several courses with emphasis on
hand injuries: tendon repair rehabilitation, concepts in hand
bracing, and rehabilitation of the upper quarter.
Joe
is recognized as an excellent speaker based on his presentations
to local and national organizations. He has presented to the New Orleans Association of
Occupational Health Nurses, a variety of case managers, oil and
grain companies, and several other local New Orleans companies.
He is an Adjunct Professor for LSU Physical Therapy,
lectures at the school, and serves as a Center Coordinator for
Clinical Education overseeing students on their internships.
Joe
has a wide variety of experience in his career.
He served in the Navy Reserves for 12 years ending his
commitment in 2002 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Navy
Supply Corps. He was
involved in Cargo Handling Battalion operations for most of his
career and served as Executive Officer of a 135 member battalion.
He coordinated operations which ranged from loading of
ammunition, amphibious off/back loading, and the handling of RORO,
containerized cargo, and break-bulk material from Lykes and
Waterman class ships. He
graduated from the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens GA, and from
the Navy War College. Joe
served in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm in 1991.
He has been recognized as Junior Officer of the Year in
1993 and has received many military metals/ribbons: Navy
Achievement Medal (4 awards), Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious
Unit Commendation, Navy “E” for Excellence in Unit Type,
Southwest Asia Medal, Sea Service Deployment, and Navy Overseas
Service.
Joe
has worked in the oil industry throughout his career.
Over several semester breaks while attending college in the
early 1980's, he worked for Good Hope Oil Refinery as a boiler
maker and welders helper. In
the late 1980's Joe continued to work in the oil industry as a
computer analyst for Freeport McMoran.
He continues to perform many ergonomic evaluations, return
to work evaluations, and safety awareness lectures at many of the
local oil refineries throughout southeast Louisiana.
Joe
has much sports related experience based on his years of playing
football, working on the sideline during local football games, and
performing pre-season screenings.
Joe is a native of LaPlace, graduating from East St. John
High School in 1981 and was a member of East St. John’s 1980
Quad “A” State High School Football Championship team.
He continued his football career by playing as an offensive
guard for the Colonels of Nicholls State, graduating in 1985 with
a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.
He
is an active member in many organizations.
He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association
(APTA) and serves on the membership committee of the local LPTA
manual therapy special interest group.
He is also a member of the American Academy of Manual
Physical Therapist (AAOMPT).
Joe participates in organizations such as Delta Safety, St.
John the Baptist Small Business Association, Louisiana Association
of Rehabilitation Counselors, and Louisiana Association of Self
Insured Employers.
He is also on the Foundation Board for New Orleans
Christian Brothers’ School.
